ABOUT

About Lois Kittner

Lois began her singing career in the 1980s as a cabaret performer. She turned her love of performing to singing at her synagogue, later taking on leadership roles as a cantorial soloist and service leader. She also has experience as an educator, which is apparent in her approach to teaching her students, young and old, how to “leyn” (chant) as well as religious school studies.

Her experience in various synagogues as a lay leader eventually drew her to a new career as a cantor. She entered the cantorial program at the Academy of Jewish Religion and was ordained in 2016. Lois has been featured in local press about her professional journey to the cantorate and her contributions to North Jersey synagogues; she has also been recognized by Jewish non-profits for her community outreach.

Lois also has experience as an educator, which is apparent in her approach to teaching her students, young and old, how to “leyn” (chant) Torah and haftarah, as well as teach religious school studies. In addition to teaching and officiating, Lois expresses her love of Torah and Judaism by writing original liturgical songs and poems. She is an active member of Women Cantors’ Network.
